Biography

“Tingling acoustic guitar meets candid vocals and strings. The variety of tone and rhythm across the track gives it a wonderful musical texture. Lovely.” Rose Benge, AAA Music Feb 2013

“LOVE Solitary Thinker, makes me think of The Doors and Bright Eyes (which equals awesome).” Kevin Hingley, Q Radio Feb 2013

"There's no greater feeling than being licked by the Common Tongues" Jeremy Sallis, BBC Radio Cambridge

Hailing from the shores of Brighton in the UK, Common Tongues were formed in 2010 by childhood friends growing up together in Cambridge, Tom Anderson and Oli Hinkins. The band combine their love of tender and emotive song writing with a passion for experimentation and atmospherics. They mix an attention to memorable yet complex melodies with the percussive explosions of Efterklang and Local Natives. They also cite Yann Tiersen, Villagers, Radiohead and Brian Wilson as inspiration.

To say 2013 has been a breakthrough year for the Brighton based 5 piece would be an understatement. The highlight so far has to be their critically acclaimed performances at Secret Garden Party, support for Villagers and Cambridge Folk Festival, the latter of which was witnessed by Radio 2’s Dermot O’Leary who promptly invited the band to play live on his show the next day. Early 2013 saw the band gain radio support in high places from the likes of Q Radio and BBC Introducing. The bands home city continued their support with the local newspaper running a week long feature claiming the band to be “Brighton’s best kept secret.” Huffington Post earmarked the band as a one to watch act featuring them alongside none other than David Bowie. Late 2013 saw them gain support from XFM for their digital single release of Beasts in November.

The band have racked up many festival appearances in the UK and Europe including Bestival, Hop Farm, The Great Escape, Secret Garden Party, Liverpool Sound City, Cornbury, Cambridge Folk Festival, Darvel Music Festival in Scotland, Sligo Live in Ireland, Reeperbahn in Germany, The Great British Folk Festival Butlins Skegness and have played support slots alongside Beth Jeans Houghton, Michele Stodart, Passenger, Will & The People, Juan Zelada, Alice Gold, Villagers and a German tour with Larkin Poe.

Common Tongues release their vinyl EP Tether & Twine on April 19th 2014 for Record Store Day.
